Hiking Maili Point “Pink Pillbox” on West Oahu in Waianae
One of my favorite hikes in Waianae is the Maili Point pillbox. One of the reasons why Oahu has such great hiking trails is the legacy of World War 2. A lot of military bunkers were built on the top of ridges, and after the war those military trails have remained as maintained hiking trails. The pink pillbox on West Oahu is one of those. The hike isn’t super long or challenging, but is long enough to make you sweat, especially considering the heat of the West side. The best time to go is in the evening for sunset to dodge the heat, catch a breeze at the top, and watch the sun set over the water. Usually at dusk all the goats come out to graze the mountainside so that’s something cool you can see also. Overall this is probably my most hiked trail on the island and I’m happy to take guests here too. Routine but never mundane!
