Hiking Kamehameha Ridge to Deadman’s Catwalk for Amazing Views in Hawaii Kai
Everything I want to do is illegal. So it goes on Oahu where so many of the best hikes are listed as "private" officially. But how come so many people do them anyways and get away with it? Here is your unofficial guide to illegal hiking on Oahu. Use your own judgment and don't blame me if something goes wrong. There are risks involved and those risks are your own. The main things I look at are citations, safety, and courtesy. If I hear about citations or read about them on alltrails, I don't do it. If I can't find any story of anyone getting cited, I will do it. The moment I hear about citations, I'm not going anymore. Turns out most of these private trails never give citations. The second thing is safety. I like small danger, but if it's big danger, I don't do it, or just do it one time to cross it off the list. Doesn't matter the legality. A lot of the private hikes are safe. I don't want to take people to Three Peaks even if it's legal because I can't have someone dying on me. The last consideration is courtesy. If I have to climb through someone's backyard I won't do it, but if it's walking by a fence on an old government road I will. I like to ask, does anyone really care? Is anyone getting harmed by me going on this hike? Is it destroying the environment? Most of the time it's no and I can feel good about doing it. So it is with Kamehameha ridge to Deadman's Catwalk in Hawaii Kai. Private property, but no citations, not dangerous, not inconveniencing anyone, and that's why it's a relatively popular trail anyways. Short hike to beautiful views. Do at your own risk.
