Hiking Koko Head Crater on Oahu outside of Honolulu

People always ask me how hard is Koko Head? Well, it’s challenging, but it’s relatively short. There are hikes that are long and hard, hikes that are long and easy, hikes that are short and easy. Well, Koko Head is hard and short. Why’s that? Well, it’s less than a mile one way, but there’s 1,000 stairs involved.

Something I like about this hike is that it’s pretty social because of how narrow and popular it is. It’s not super crowded, but you will be passing people as you go up and down and it’s a chance to talk to different travelers from all over the world. Of course there are locals, and you can spot these people because they run up and down the stairs, or you see them passing a second time for another lap. Seems crazy but makes sense if you live in the neighborhood.

Even for an athlete like me who is very well conditioned, this hike really gets my heart pumping, especially if I push the speed. The challenge has everything to do with the pace you choose. You can make it easy by going slow, or make it hard by trying to set a PR. I haven’t timed myself too closely but I know I’ve done it in less than 20 minutes to the top. Don’t worry if it takes you an hour or more though, you’ll get the same reward.

Beyond the satisfaction of doing something difficult you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of East Honolulu. Don’t stop there though! If you climb a little bit higher you’ll get views over the ancient volcanic crater over the ocean and some more neighborhoods on the island. Two awesome views in one. The trail does continue around the crater rim but it’s super sketchy even for a thrill seeker like me because of the narrow trail and steep drop off, so it’s not something I can recommend for everyone.

I can recommend Koko Head stairs for everyone though. Great hike, great challenge, great view, great vibes. One of my favorite short hikes on the island.
