Hike Ka’ena Point Pillbox for an Unforgettable View

A lot of people do hike Ka'ena point, but not a lot of people climb the ridge to the pillbox peak overlooking what was known to the Hawaiians as The Leaping Place of Souls. Ka'ena is a nice, level walk, and if you go during whale season you'll likely spot them playing. The nature reserve is an opportunity to see albatross mating, monk seals, and climb a risky old guard tower. But if instead you turn at the protective fence and know where to look you'll find a trail up the ridge. This is an incredibly unique view as you won't see any houses or private property, just wildlife preserve and trails. A special habitat with albatross circling below where you can see the crashing of north and west waves at the far point of the island. It's tempting to stay until sunset but the gate closes at 7 so get out in time unless you want a surprise overnight adventure.
