Hiking Upper Makua Cave in Waianae

I can’t recommend you do this hike because one, it’s on private property, and two, the cave has special meaning to some local Hawaiians and they prefer if people didn’t do it. Nevertheless, I’ve done this hike. My philosophy is always treat everyone with respect, respect the land by packing out what you pack in, and leave the space a little cleaner. Do that and most of the time things are going to be okay. As for the hike itself, it’s a relatively short, unmaintained scramble on West Oahu that makes a nice hiking break between hanging out at Makua beach or Yokohama Bay. The view is stunning and the cave offers nice shade on a hot day. If you go don’t tell anyone I told you to go, because I didn’t. Keep the secret spot secret eh.
